Good morning. I spent time this week with one of the top Executive Directors in our organization.  We spent the day refreshing our strategy for 2025 and reflecting on a great year in 2024.  This leader posted industry-leading performance results on all fronts, including employee engagement, resident satisfaction, 98% occupancy, and a strong bottom line.

He and his team of 30+ leaders are going all in on relational leadership in 2025, and I left feeling 100% confident they will exceed expectations. 

He shared with us his challenge for his leadership team- Evaluate what percentage of your leadership is tactical vs relational and work to shift another 5-10% to the relational side.

Understanding Tactical and Relational Leadership

Tactical leadership emphasizes efficiency and the execution of immediate tasks. Tactical leaders prioritize structure and clear directives to ensure daily operations run smoothly and short-term goals are met. This approach is indispensable during periods requiring quick action and decisive resource management.

In contrast, relational leadership centers around strong interpersonal connections. Relational leaders focus on fostering trust, collaboration, and open communication. This style creates an environment where team members feel valued and motivated—essential for long-term adaptability and engagement.

The Importance of a Strong Relational Foundation

While tactical leadership drives efficiency, it has its limits when not underpinned by relational leadership. Strong relationships create a foundation of trust and psychological safety, enabling teams to execute tasks effectively. Without these relationships, tactical directives can feel rigid or demotivating, leading to burnout and diminished productivity.

Research confirms that relational leadership is a core factor in organizational effectiveness, enhancing team cohesion, learning, and job satisfaction (NIH). Similarly, relationship-focused leaders foster higher productivity and well-being, making relational leadership foundational to sustainable success.

Balancing Tactical and Relational Leadership

The key to effective leadership is balance. An over-reliance on tactical leadership can stifle creativity and reduce morale, while an excess of relational focus may lead to a lack of accountability and unmet objectives. Research suggests that leaders who combine both approaches see better overall performance and employee satisfaction (Frames.gov).

Practical Steps to Enhance Your Leadership Style

1. Assess Your Team’s Needs
   Understand whether your team requires immediate task oversight or more support and encouragement. Adjust your approach based on these dynamics.

2. Prioritize Relationship Building
   Invest in knowing your team members’ strengths, challenges, and motivations. Strong interpersonal relationships foster trust, which in turn enhances productivity.

3. Integrate Relational Leadership into Tactical Planning
   Make sure your tactical strategies account for the well-being and contributions of your team members. This integration leads to more effective and motivated task execution.

4. Seek Feedback and Continuously Adapt
   Regularly gather input from your team to understand how your leadership approach impacts them. Use this feedback to maintain the balance between task execution and relationship-building.

Grounding your leadership in strong, caring relationships builds a platform for tactical strategies to thrive. This approach drives both immediate results and long-term team satisfaction. Remember, effective leadership is not about choosing one style over the other but blending both to meet your organization’s evolving needs.
