There’s a phrase I’ve been chewing on lately:

“It may not be your fault, but it’s still your problem.”

Let that one settle for a second.

Because if you lead a community, this phrase isn’t just a philosophical musing—it’s a daily reality. Every NHA and senior living leader I know has a laundry list of things they didn’t cause, didn’t sign up for, and sure as hell didn’t vote on. But guess what?

It still lands squarely in your lap.

Here’s what I’m hearing out there:

Regulatory environment sucks. Yep, nailed it.
Hospitals are sitting on empty beds. Truth.
You can’t find enough staff to run a bingo game, let alone a night shift. Bingo.
People just don’t want to work. Ding ding ding.

Every one of these excuses? Totally real. Not made up. Not “playing the victim.” They’re true.

And, it still doesn’t matter.

The state surveyor doesn’t care. Your regional VP doesn’t care. Your residents? Definitely don’t care.

You either rise above it—or you sink into the same tired excuse pile as everyone else.

This is the fork in the road where exceptional leadership breaks from average. Because while most are sitting around telling war stories about how hard it is, you’re busy building something that works despite all of it.

Yes, your situation might not be your fault. But it’s still your job to fix it. Because that’s leadership. That’s the chair you sit in. That’s what separates a manager from a mission-driven NHA.

So today, no matter how much mud is flying at the fan:

Do it anyway.

Hire anyway.
Inspire anyway.
Hold standards anyway.
Push forward anyway.

And in doing so, you become the kind of leader this field desperately needs.
