Good afternoon. Today I am sharing the system I created to help me compartmentalize and prioritize my life. Elevate your operation with The Iceberg Model I have noticed over the years that the tasks or actions that I dread and procrastinate on the most often are the actions that, if tackled head-on, would have the most significant upside for me. The tough conversation, the first step in getting started on a big project, or the feedback I have been holding onto all usually fit this formula. They're easy to push off and the outcomes of non-action are not always easy to see. The more aware of it I became, the more I wanted to fight my natural tendency to put things off because they're hard or might be unpleasant in the moment. The more I fought back, the more I noticed other leaders falling into the same pattern. I began writing down the tasks I least wanted to perform and listing the consequences of each item. Over time this turned into a format resembling an iceberg where the topics are listed at the top, and all futuristic consequences are listed underneath. Like an iceberg, most of the substance or results are underwater and out of sight. Most leaders make decisions and prioritize based on a limited view. They look at the iceberg from above the water and underestimate its impact that is hiding beneath the surface. Here's how you can make decisions based on the view below the water. On a spreadsheet or sheet of paper, list on the first row all of the items, tasks, and conversations you have been dreading or have continually been pushed off to tomorrow's to-do list. Answer the following questions on the subsequent rows using a word or a maximum of one sentence.
Take a step back, and check out what you have created. You now have a visualization of the entire iceberg, not just the parts above the water. What have you been putting off that would position you closer to your goals tomorrow if you knocked out today?
